How to calculate back space and offset

Calculating the backspace and/or offset of the wheel is important when ordering new wheels. Especially if the tyre size changes it is important to consider the correct offset.

  • Offset is the distance between hub mounting face and wheel center line.
  • Track width is the distance between wheel center lines.
  • Negative offset increases track width, positive offset decreases it.
  • BACKSPACE CALCULATION:
  • Backspace (BS) is a measure from wheels machine side edge to hub mounting face
  • Offset can be calculated from BS measurement
  • e.g. DW18L*38 BS 200 mm
    • Rim width: 457 mm
    • Flange width: 21 mm
    • Offset: 200 – (457/2 + 21) = -50 mm

Here’s a snip from our Wheel training video of the backspace calculation:
